Reviews: Anne Harris

The Nature of Smoke was Harris' first published novel, and was great fun: young lesbians, cyberpunk, Detroit, Antarctica - I think one of the blurbs described it as "riot-grrrl cyberpunk." Close enough. This is a fun read, and all the necessary elements for good sf are there: good character development, more than adequate writing, fast-moving & intricate plot, and - yes - there should be enough tech to make the fan-boys happy.

Accidental Creatures has more of that second-novel polish, primarily displayed in somewhat tighter plotting. Harris has done a good job in following up her first novel. Keywords: environmental degradation, evil corporations, bioengineering. And an unexpected pleasure: union organizing. -- lq 5/23/99
