Wild Life slides more easily into "slipstream" than what many think of as science fiction or fantasy; see Karen Joy Fowler's Sarah Canary for another work of the historical-plus American West. Wild Life is the prose adventure of early 20th century potboiler writer Charlotte Drummond, writing in her notebook, scraps of what are definitely journal, definitely fiction, and maybe something else. Lovely writing from the perspective of an energetic & opinionated character -- who catches herself in her own preconceptions -- and who becomes wild and maybe crazy. -- lq, 11/10/2002
