Rising takes place in near-future Ireland. An expatriate women returns home to find that the political situation for women, bad when she left, has gotten much worse. Most human rights are denied to women by a government controlled by the Catholic Church. She looks around for someone to change things and then finds herself leading a revolution. Although this work does focus on a society in which women's roles are substantially limited, the focus is not on the society or on the ramifications of gender-roles, but on the revolution led by the hero. The title is taken from a quote by Bobby Sands. --lq, 5/26/95.
